In dem Band wird die Bedeutung der Erziehung in der Familie und in verschiedenen Kulturen für die Entstehung von Aggressivität behandelt. Es werden Ergebnisse umfangreicher Längsschnittuntersuchungen an Jugendlichen, Müttern und ihren Kindern berichtet. Deutliche Unterschiede in der Erziehung und in der Aggressivitätsentwicklung von Kindern und Jugendlichen wurden in Deutschland (und z.T. der Schweiz) im Vergleich mit drei ostasiatischen Kulturen (u.a. dem hochindustrialisierten Japan und dem traditionell-hinduistischen Bali) nachgewiesen. Grundlage der Untersuchungen ist die Motivationstheorie der Aggression, die auch die biologisch-evolutionären Bedingungen einbezieht. Die Kulturen werden in ihren Besonderheiten beschrieben, und die Ergebnisse werden abschließend auf Erziehungsfragen in Deutschland bezogen.
